Our Group
Explorers are young adults aged 14-18. The Handsworth 273rd has a partnership agreement with Norfolk district Explorers.
Explorers is a section devoted to helping develop young people into young adults and develop as people, socially, mentally, spiritually and in Scouting. It is the first section which has awards which are recognised by colleges, universities and employers and the structure of Explorers recognises the fact that, as young adults, many will be taking exams or holding down jobs or have other requirements on their time. Although asked to make a commitment, young adults can choose which meetings they attend, whether at their own group or at another from the district. The opportunity to start taking responsibility as a Leader and develop leadership and management skills is opened by the Young Leaders Scheme, available to all young people aged 14-18. The whole essence of Explorer Scouting is Flexibility.
The Explorers at Handsworth meet on a Wednesday. For more information please contact the Explorer leaders on explorers@handsworthscouts.org.uk
What do Explorers do?
Programme Zones split the whole new balanced programme into manageable areas.
The Explorer Scout Programme is based around eight Programme Zones:
Outdoors
Skills
Physical Recreation
Community Service
Environment
International
Relationships
Values
These Zones represent development areas for Explorer Scouts. At first glance they seem very similar to the Scout Zones, but as these young people grow into young adults the difference between them is very relevant to how a young adult thinks. Skills alone could potentially cover a massive area from traditional Outdoor Scout Skills to Social Skills, from using knives and axes to dancing and DJ Mixing! Alongside all this, the very powerful Young Leaders Programme opens up another huge range of possibilities and responsibilities.
